Return to Blogging

This blog has been sadly neglected this summer. We’ve had house-guests since early June; we still have one, and more are expected on and off through early October. We love our guests, but it’s been busy. We made two trips to Belgium, bought a car and started driving lessons (more on that in the next post), and accompanied our guests on a number of outings both in and out of London.

Cliveden House – This is where Meghan Markle stayed before the Royal Wedding in May.

It’s also been a hot summer of drought complete with wildfires. We almost felt like we were back in California. I told Kurt more than once, “I didn’t come to England to sweat!” Alas, he wasn’t able to do anything about the heat for me. But, since our house doesn’t have air conditioning, we are now heavily invested in fans. Luckily, we bought them before they ran out. We went back and tried to get one more, and the clerk at the store all but laughed at us. Kurt kindly hoped he didn’t sprain an eye rolling it upon hearing our question. I was feeling less charitable; heat makes me cranky.

The key to a great Stonehenge picture is to go in bad weather and get there early.

Now that August is rolling into September and routines are being reestablished, we’re getting back to the blog and hoping to be more consistent going forward. We’re still ecstatic to be living in London and are enjoying (nearly) every moment of it. We especially love walking up the stairs from a tube station and emerging next to a well-known landmark. Sometimes, I feel the need to pinch myself to make sure it’s real. It really is starting to feel like home.

  1. I remember one year in July it was very warm…unusual for jolly ole England…and no ac but fans then too!! Crazy times…glad you two are getting settled. I’ve missed your blogs and pics…

    1. This summer set an all-time high for summer temperatures since they started keeping track in 1910. It was slightly hotter than the 1976 heatwave, and similar to the 2003 and 2006 heatwaves. They’re predicting a warmer than usual fall as well. We’re keeping the fans handy, but it’s beautiful right now.
